What did you have for breakfast this morning? While some choose not to have breakfast each morning, children around the world do not have that choice and often resort to eating mud or nothing at all. This is where Kids Against Hunger steps in. With the help of companies like Quaker Oats, Pillsbury, General Mills, Cargill, and ADM, Kids Against Hunger provides six nutritionally complete meals to children locally and internationally all for only 25 cents a serving.
Every hour, 12 children per minute die of starvation or malnutrition related diseases. Kids Against Hunger packages a unique formula of ingredients formulated by food scientists to provide a rich source of easily digestible protein, carbohydrates and vitamins that are needed by an undernourished child’s body and mind (source).
On July 14th, Kids Against Hunger of Cedar Rapids is hosting their 2nd Annual 5K/10K and 1K Family Fun Run at Greene Square Park. The KAHCR run is powered by Chiropractic Heath Care Associates and CrossFIT Cedar Rapids. 100% of the proceeds will go towards Kids Against Hunger of Cedar Rapids to package food for the hungry. Last year, 27,000 meals were packaged on race day.
In addition to the race, runners have the opportunity to have a food packaging experience after the race. The more runners, funding and volunteers they have, the more children they will be able to feed all over the world. Some of the countries they have sent packaged food to include: Afghanistan, Chile, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Mexico, Kenya, India, Russia, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and the United States. This is just a few of the 40 countries where they have sent food thus far.
If you are looking for a summer race, or interested in getting more involved with Kids Against Hunger, please register for this race. It’s a great way to introduce your children to a cause they are able to participate in at school, with their club team or other organizations. Not to mention it’s fun for all ages, and it’s a great way to get out and exercise as a family. In addition to the race, your school, organization, etc. can plan an event. They bring the ingredients, you just have to provide the funding and volunteers to assemble food packages.
