Light It Up Blue – Autism Speaks

Light It Up BlueEvery April 2nd, Autism Speaks celebrates Light It Up Blue!  (See last year’s post here.)  In honor of those living with autism, families, friends, historic landmarks, and many organizations around the world Light It Up Blue.  You too can take part by changing out your porch lights with a blue one.  If you aren’t able to Light It Up Blue, you can still help support Autism Speaks by creating awareness on your blog, Facebook, and Twitter, just check out their Tools & Resources page.  You can also make a donation to Autism Speaks here or purchase a really awesome Sevenly shirt here!

Get Movin’ and Walk

If you’re like me, this is about the time of the season that you’re itching to get out of the house, spend more time with friends, and maybe get in a little exercise while you’re at it.  The great thing about living in the Creative Corridor, is that you have access to a few malls that are nice enough to let local charitable organizations use them for some of their annual fundraisers.

Since there are so many worthwhile organizations that have mall walk fundraisers coming up in the next few months, I thought I would break down the upcoming walks for those who are in the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City area.

MDA Walk

Muscular Dystrophy Association | MDA Muscle Walk | February 9th @ Coral Ridge Mall | 8 AM – 10 AM

JDRF Walk to Cure

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation | Walk to Cure | February 23rd @ Westdale Mall | 8 AM / 10 AM Walk

CMC Mall Walk

Catherine McAuley Center | Movin’ For McAuley | March 9th @ Westdale Mall | 9 AM / 10 AM Walk

marchofdimes

March of Dimes | March for Babies | April 28th @ Rockwell Collins | 8 AM / 9 AM Walk

Walk MS Logo

National Multiple Sclerosis Society | Walk MS | May 18th @ Kirkwood Community College | TBA

These are just the ones on my radar for the Spring.  Please let me know if I missed your favorite!  I hope you have a chance to attend one (or more!).  These are all great causes and hold a special place in my heart, so I know I’ll be at most, if not all, of these walks.  Interested in getting a team together, but not sure how to get the word out?  Have a team, but want help spreading the word?  Leave a comment on the blog or my Facebook page and I’ll do what I can to help!

See you at the mall!

Fall FEED-Raiser

As you may or may not know… I have been named a FEED Ambassador as a part of FEED Projects.  As a FEED Ambassador, it is my duty to create fundraisers or events that aim to support our local food pantries, create hunger awareness or raise money for The FEED Foundation.

I decided to support The FEED Foundation for my first event!  I joined forces with Jersey’s Pub and Grub Downtown to offer 5 drinks and a $5 donation to The FEED Foundation.  How great, right!?  I’ll be there with my FEED 10 shirt on and FEED 1 bag in tow.  Not only are they super fashionable, but both of these products support school meals for hungry children around the world.  Why school meals?  Because studies show that when children can rely on a nutritious meal, they are more likely to be sent to school rather than working to earn money for their families.

Join me at Jerseys Downtown from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m on Saturday, November 3rd to support The FEED Foundation and party for a cause!

Weekend Recap

Despite a chilly start, the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s was outstanding!  Z102.9’s Overnight Kim started off the walk with three very inspiring stories from two young Alzheimer’s supporters, a woman who’s husband passed away from Alzheimer’s and a beautiful story about a woman who is her husband’s caretaker.

After registering everyone was given a flower in one of four colors.  Blue if you have Alzheimer’s, purple if you know someone with Alzheimer’s, yellow if you are a caretaker of someone with Alzheimer’s and orange if you support the cause.  While participants were walking, those flowers were used for a very beautiful display at the Promise Garden when we returned.

Here is a look at Saturday’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Cedar Rapids:

I’m always looking for ways to support charitable organizations!  If you are having an event or want some help promoting your team, please contact me by sending me an email charitableconnections@gmail.com, on Facebook or Twitter.  I would be more than happy to get the word out about your event or participate, so please let me know what I can do to help.
