Weekend Recap

Despite a chilly start, the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s was outstanding!  Z102.9’s Overnight Kim started off the walk with three very inspiring stories from two young Alzheimer’s supporters, a woman who’s husband passed away from Alzheimer’s and a beautiful story about a woman who is her husband’s caretaker.

After registering everyone was given a flower in one of four colors.  Blue if you have Alzheimer’s, purple if you know someone with Alzheimer’s, yellow if you are a caretaker of someone with Alzheimer’s and orange if you support the cause.  While participants were walking, those flowers were used for a very beautiful display at the Promise Garden when we returned.

Here is a look at Saturday’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Cedar Rapids:

I’m always looking for ways to support charitable organizations!  If you are having an event or want some help promoting your team, please contact me by sending me an email charitableconnections@gmail.com, on Facebook or Twitter.  I would be more than happy to get the word out about your event or participate, so please let me know what I can do to help.

I walk to #ENDALZ

Why do you participate in walks, runs, and other fundraisers for your favorite organizations?  Do you participate because you have personally been affected by a disease or illness?  To honor and remember those who have been lost?  To fight back?  Or is it because your participation now means that future generations may not be affected by the diseases and illnesses that we face today?  This is why I Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

September is World Alzheimer’s Month and on September 22, Team CharitableConnections will walk to end Alzheimer’s, so future generations can have more hope to fight this disease.   I am thankful that none of my immediate family has currently been affected by Alzheimer’s, however, I still hurt for those who have.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, “Alzheimer’s is a type of dementia that causes problems with memory, thinking and behavior” (link).

For me, memories are so important.  Possessions can often be replaced, but your memories will be with you forever.  I love listening to my grandma’s stories of when she was growing up, where she lived, and the places she has visited.  I may not have the pictures from her journeys, but her memories are what lasts and will stay with my sister and I forever.  I think that’s why she has kept a journal for as long as I can remember, and continues to journal daily.

Here are some Alzheimer’s and Dementia Basics:

  • Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia.
  • It is not a normal part of aging.
  • Alzheimer’s worsens over time.
  • There is currently no cure, treatments for symptoms are available and research is being done to find ways to treat, delay and prevent symptoms.

Research is being done, but this is also where you and I come in.  By joining my team or making a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association, you can help others keep their memories longer.  On September 21, you can also be a part of the Alzheimer’s Association’s day of action by wearing PURPLE and help turn Facebook and Twitter purple by using the hash tag #ENDALZ and changing your profile picture to the END ALZ logo below.

Education is also very important to ensure that more is understood in preventing and recognizing symptoms of Alzheimer’s to aid in early detection.  Please follow the link to learn the 10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s and Go Purple on September 21, to help create awareness about memory loss.
